Made the most of a gorgeous, hot afternoon earlier (- they don’t happen often in Manchester!) and sat in the garden with the girls enjoying the sun. They were treated to some chopped up grapes and strawberries today; a little past their best but still a-la-carte if you’re a greedy hen! Whilst they devoured their treats I sat on the steps next to them (as always on my faithful upturned tub) and did a bit of work for a course I’m on this week – lovely way to start the evening.
One of the girls (Rosie) has been sneezing on and off for a while but seemed fine apart from that. We went to the vets a while ago for a check up and she seemed to be fine. She had some precautionary antibiotics but the vet thought she could be suffering from hay fever! Today she sounded like she had a cold and was a little bit quiet so I decided to start her back on her antibiotics – she however had other ideas. Giving a hen antibiotics ‘by beak’ with a syringe is not always easy and I think it’s a highly underrated skill! Anyway, after a bit of flapping, a substantial flurry of feathers (Rosie is moulting) and a small but defiant poop on my knee, the job was done. I’ll keep an eye on her over the next few days and fingers crossed she’ll be back to her mischievous self in no time.
